Podcast Subscribing and Playing Instructions via Internet Explorer 7

If you are familiar with Podcasting and simply need the feed, here it is:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/HighcallingBlog
To download a printable PDF version of these directions, click here.

Step #1. Check to see if you have Internet Explorer 7 (IE7)

a. Internet Explorer version 7 is an upgrade available to users of Windows XP and should come included with Windows Vista. It should have been installed during Windows XP automatic updates.

We believe that FireFox and Opera are better and more secure internet browsers (less chance of being interferred with by virus, malware, etc.) and would recommend that you use either one as your default browser instead of IE7. But, we do recognise that IE is the most popular browser and that version 7 is an upgrade on version 6. IE7 only works on Windows XP or Vista .. it will not work on Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000. If you are using Windows 98, ME or 2000, you are best to use FireFox (versions also available for Mac and Linux) or Opera (versions available for Windows 98, ME, 2000, Mac OS 9, OS X, Linux, Solaris, and others).

You can check to see if version 7 is installed by following these steps.
b. Launch Internet Explorer from the Start bar or some other shortcut that may be on your desktop or shortcuts bar. When IE7 launches, it should look something like this:
c. Go to the Help menu and choose About Internet Explorer like this:
d. A window will open showing the version number. That window should look something like this:
e. If the about window looks like this indicating that you have IE7 installed already, then proceed to Step 3.

Step #2. Downloading Internet Explorer 7

a. Using what ever internet browers you currently have (ie. Internet Explorer 6, etc.), go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/. The page will look something like:
Scroll down that page. Near the bottom left you will see the download button to start the download.
c. Select Download. You will now likely be taken through a Validation process. Microsoft wants to be sure that you have a valid and legitamate copy of Windows XP or Vista installed in your system and so it is going to check your system (BTW, this is something that Apple does not do and is part of making the Apple Macintosh a more private system). Once it has gone through the Validation process, the file should start downloading. It may ask you if you like to Open or Run the program or if you'd like to Save it. If you have the opportunity to Open or Run it then do so. If the only choice is to save the file then save it to your desktop so you can find it easily.
d. If you selected Open or Run, then when the program is done downloading, it should start the Internet Explorer 7 Installation program. Follow the prompts until IE7 is completely installed.

If the file was Saved to your desktop, then find a file that starts with the name "IE7". Find that file and double-click it to start the installation.
e.
When the IE7 installer program is done, IE7 should now be completely installed. You can verify as noted in Step #1.

Step #3. Subscribing to the Highcalling Podcast in Internet Explorer 7

a.
Launch Internet Explorer 7 if it not already up and go to http://highcalling.randomize.com/podcast.html. The page should look something like this:
b.
Now click on the Highcalling Podcast Feed link or button in the left hand column. A new window or tab will open with content that looks something like the following:
c.
In the upper right of the window, you will see a tool bar like this:

We are specifically interested in the icon that looks like this:

It has always been there before, but now it is glowing orange indicating the presence of RSS feed information on this page.

Click on this icon () and the page will change to look like the following:
d.
On this page any of the blue coloured items are links including head-phone pictures. This page is giving us access to the editions, but we haven't actually subscribed yet.
We are specifically interested in the content of the box near the top left in yellow that reads:

This is where we subscribe!
e.
Click on Subscribe to this feed.
Once you've done that, a window will pop up asking for a confirmation of the subscription:

Select the Subscribe button and that window will go away and the window underneith it will be updated to include the following message in the yellow box:
f. Click on View my feeds. The page will change to look something like this:
We are specifically interested in the window that has come up on our left showing our feeds including the Highcalling Blog. From now on, all we need to do is go click on this show us and listen to the latest Highcalling Podcast!

Step #4. Playing the Highcalling Podcast in IE7

a.
Check the Feeds window to see the latest editions. You will find the Feeds window by clicking on the Favorites Button. The Favorites button looks like on the far left near the top of the window as seen here:
b.
When you click the Favorites Button (), you will see the list of Feeds including the Highcalling Blog like this:
c. Double-click on Highcalling Blog, and all of the most recent editions will be listed looking something like this:
If we look closely at one entry:
Anything underlined in blue is a link and will open up new content if you click on it. To play the audio of this Podcast editions we are specifcially interetested in in the bottom of the entry. If you click on either of these, a window will open and a media player (may be Windows Media Player, may be QuickTime Play, Real Player or other .. depending on which player is set as your default for MP3 files) will open and play the file. Be aware that it may take some time for the file to download fully before playing. There is a download quage in the very bottom of the window that will give you a good idea of the file's download progress.

Congratulations! You have subscribed to the Highcalling Podcast and listing in!

Step #5. Setting the Feeds / Podcast Settings - Optional

a.
You should be aware that from a technical point of view, a Podcast is just a feed for linking to audio files, so any settings for feeds affects the Podcast subscription.

You likely noticed a box on the right side of the Podcast listings like the one here on the right.

This window shows how many entries or editions are in this listing beside Displaying.

Below Displaying is a search window. You can type any text in here and it will narrow down the entries to those that contain the text you've entered in this box.

Beneath that you can choose to show all and to Sort the entries by Date, Title or Author.

Then underneath this box, you will see View feed properties ... if you click that the following window will pop up:
b.
This window shows the properties for this feed / podcast including it's name and address. You may change any of these as you wish. Basically, it is set up to check once every day to see if there is a new addition. These defaults should be sufficient for most people. You can change that frequency by choosing the Settings button which will give you a window like this:
c. We really hope you enjoy the Highcalling Podcast. We really do need your feedback back to make the Podcast and and instructions the very best they can be. Please fill in and submit our Feedback Survey.

Congratulations! You have subscribed to the Highcalling Podcast and listing in!
